Walnut is a generally straight-grained, but
sometimes wavy or curly grain that produces an
attractive and decorative figure. It works easily
with hand and machine tools, and nails, screws and
glues well. It holds paint and stain very well for
an exceptional finish and is readily polished. It
dries slowly, and care is needed to avoid kiln
degrade.
- Colour:Highly praised heartwood is light brown to dark
chocolate brown. Sapwood is pale to whitish
brown. Heartwood is medium to chocolate brown.
- Texture:Close textured, diffuse porous.
- Applications: High-end furniture, flooring,
mouldings, caskets, millwork, cabinets,
architectural millwork, doors, flooring,
paneling, and gun stocks. A favoured wood for
using in contrast with lighter-coloured species.
Generally available 4/4 through 8/4 thickness,
limited availability 10/4 and thicker.
- Physical Properties:Walnut has good dimensional
stability. Strong, heavy, hard, high in
shock-resistance.
